We have an exciting announcement!

Carpet and the energy-efficient home

Sustainability is big news these days. Much more than a fashionable buzzword, it’s the key to an approach that uses the planet’s resources in a way that preserves them for future generations.

Like so many things, sustainability begins at home. Looking at the carpet beneath your feet, how can you make choices that look after Mother Earth and save you money too?

Energy efficiency is one of the key concepts here. A home that’s well insulated will be warmer in depths of winter and cooler during the scorching days of summer. The good news is that carpet is a natural thermal insulator, ensuring you retain up to 10% of the heat that would otherwise escape through floors. Technically, this is because all carpet types have low heat induction – but you’ll probably just be glad to see lower power bills during the chilly months.

In the current economic climate, with fewer people shifting house and fewer new houses being built, it’s natural to look at making the most of the home you already have. New carpet laid over hard flooring will not only update the look of your home – it could also reduce draughts and help reduce your heating bills.

Carpet underlay also has a very important part to play in making your home energy-efficient. It provides an extra level of insulation, helping to retain heat in the home for longer. You’ll certainly notice the difference when your feet hit the floor as you get out of bed on a frosty August morning.

Sustainability has a broader dimension too. Natural fibres, such as the wool and jute used in carpet manufacture, offer a green option when thinking about the total environmental impact of your new carpet. Quality wool carpets that are correctly fitted by professional carpet installers should last longer than cheap carpets. The lifetime cost will be lower – and you won’t be responsible for sending unnecessary volumes of waste to landfill.

Isn’t it nice to know that the new carpet you choose to add style and comfort to your home can also trim costs from your energy bill and help make the world a more sustainable place?
