What Warrants A Warranty?
Nearly all carpets sold today come with some sort of carpet warranty … and like most warranty documents, they’re bound to be confusing, right?
Most carpet warranties deal with a number of aspects of carpet durability, and can vary depending on the manufacturer and materials in question. But here’s a quick guide on what some of the terms used in carpet warranties mean:
Wear
Most carpets today carry wear warranties, which mean the carpet is guaranteed not to lose any more than a predefined amount of pile weight over a given period. Synthetic carpets usually have longer wear warranty periods than wool, as they take a long time to lose fibre. Keep in mind though, that outward appearance doesn’t necessarily indicate fibre loss. If your carpet looks flat or fuzzy, this may just be related to people walking on it over long periods of time – what’s known as ‘traffic related’ damage. But if you do suspect your carpet is shedding too much pile weight, it might pay to get one of our technicians to take a look.
Stain
While wool carpets are naturally stain resistant, they don’t usually carry stain warranties. This is because they can’t be treated for staining like synthetic products can. Most synthetic carpets, on the other hand, do have stain warranties – but keep in mind that ANY carpet can be stained or damaged through careless treatment, which will fall outside of warranty protection. Always treat your carpet with care and attend to stains quickly. The most comprehensive stain cover is generally provided by SDN carpets.
Fade
This part of the warranty is dependent on where the carpet is being placed. While all carpets have to meet minimum requirements of colourfastness and fade resistance, obviously carpet laid in a sunny room will fade quicker than carpet in a dark room. Only SDN carpets and some polypropylene carpets carry fade clauses in their warranties. If you’re concerned about fade affecting your carpet, it might pay to have your windows slightly tinted, and be careful to shift furniture and rugs around regularly.
Wear and tear
Extended wear warranties can give you extra peace of mind, and these can last for many years. There are a number of options depending on the carpet in question, so ask a Carpet One representative what extended wear warranties are available to you once you decide on a carpet.
